Aloha fellow plein air Saturday painters,

Painting with Mark Brown on Saturday, Nov. 1, will be on the windward side in Temple Valley. We will be painting at the Byodo-In Temple in the very back of the Temple Valley Cemetery in Kane'ohe.

COST:

  • Free for enrolled students of the Oil/Acrylic Painting on Location Hawaii Art Class - University Of Hawaii Manoa Click here to learn more.
  • $20 If you like to try the class without committing to a full semester. Fill out form and mark will contact you with instructions.>>>>>>>

To get there go North on Kahekili Hwy. about 2 miles from Likelike Hwy. Make a left hand turn into the Temple Valley Cemetery; there‘s a traffic light with the Valley Shopping Center + McDonalds on the right. Drive to the back of the Cemetery on the main road, the Byodo-In Temple at the end of the road up against the Ko'olau Mountains.Mark has arranged for our group to paint there and we are asked to observe a few requests:1.

The Temple will open at 9:00, we can start gathering after 8:30, at the foot bridge entry, and go in as soon as we're allowed.2.

There is a $3:00 entry fee.3.

We're asked not the park in the lot at the main Temple entry, since we'll be there several hours; they like to keep the lot in front near the entry for quick guest turnover. We're asked to park along the main road leading to the Temple. It's okay to drop off your stuff at the main entry before you park your car.4.

Please set up your painting spot to the side of the walkways so as not to block the paths for others.5.

Bring insect repellent.

This Byodo-In Temple is a replica of a nearly 1000 year old Byodo-In Temple in Uji, Japan. There are a few differences, this Temple in scaled down in size and it's made of concrete and not wood as was the original. The beauty of the original masterpiece is unmistakable. This is an "unofficial" Buddhist Temple, so feel free to paint with whatever spirit inhabits you.Good Painting, Dennis

Here are some photos of a painting I did of Byodo-in temple last year, although the temple looks involved and complicated to paint, I simply start by taking my brush with paint and staining my canvas with a box design and adding boxes before painting the temple itself. look forward to doing a demo to demystify what looks like could be your worst nightmare ( Halloween implications)

I'll see you all at 8:30 am prior to going onto the grounds of the temple,

mahalo Mark
